Today’s News
The Senate is debating a bill that could strip millions of Americans of their right to vote.
The Senate voted Tuesday to begin a marathon debate on the SAVE America Act, an elections bill backed by President Trump that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot. Here is what that actually means: tens of millions of Americans whose last names do not match those on their passports or birth certificates including approximately 69 million women who changed their last name when they married could be blocked from registering. Democracy Docket Voting experts warn that at least 20 million U.S. citizens of voting age do not have readily available proof of citizenship. Spectrum Local News The good news: Democrats have vowed to block it, and the bill needs 60 votes to overcome a filibuster, votes Republicans do not have. The fight is happening right now on the Senate floor.
The Post Office just told Congress it could run out of money within a year.
Postmaster General David Steiner warned lawmakers this week that if business continues as usual, USPS is on track to run out of cash and may have to stop deliveries. NPR This is not an abstract problem. SNAP recertification letters, prescription drugs, Social Security notices, ballots all of it moves through the mail. USPS may not be able to pay its employees or vendors by February 2027 unless Congress lifts a decades-old borrowing cap. Trump has also been pushing to privatize the agency. If that happens, rural communities and low-income households will pay the price first.
Illinois is voting today and turnout is surging.
